So Very Thankful

We have so much to be thankful for this year. We have a new, happy and healthy monkey in our barrel. We have family and friends that have loved and supported us all year. We have been fortunate to have the means to go on all our adventures.

Opa came out to meet Aravis during Thanksgiving week. The two had so much fun together.

Oma got more snuggle time
The boys participated in our new family tradition of a Thanksgiving morning Walk/Run that raises money for our local hemophilia chapter. Both Daddy and Elias were able to shave a few seconds off their times from last year. Emmett got a shiny metal!

We all went to Grandma's for a nice meal...

Aravis also got to meet her Great Grammy during the holiday weekend.

That Grammy is pretty awesome!

One full moon cycle old!

Our little monkey has made it from one Super Moon to another. She is one month old. She has started to smile and talk. She is quite the little talker. Maybe that's what you get from having two older brothers in a very loud house....

One month stats:
Weight: 10 lbs 9 oz
Height: 22 inches

First fortnight

Aravis has been doing quite well for her first two weeks in the barrel. She is very alert, loves to eat and snuggle. She's a pretty calm baby (except for when she is hungry, wet, or tired.)

Pooping is serious business

Newborn smiles...

Daddy's mini-me. We think she takes after him.

Two week stats:
Height: 22 inches (grew a whole inch!!!)
Weight: 9 lbs, 7 oz (whoa good eater!)
Head Circumference: 35 cm
Sleep: mostly 2-3 hours, but occasionally up to 4 hours!

Boo!

Halloween is a favorite holiday around the barrel. There's going to the pumpkin patch, carving the pumpkins, dressing up, and of course trick-o-treating!

Halloween is also Bowie's birthday! He's 4!

We have Beast Boy, an Army skeleton, and black cat

All that stash!

Aravis' Birth Story

Our Aravis came to us during the weekend of a Super Moon (Hunter Moon in Aries). Out of all the guesses, Daddy got the actual date correct as it coincides with the anniversary of when Mama and Daddy met 19 years ago. Mama's labor started and stopped a few times. Finally on Friday October 14th in the late evening, her prodromal labor transitioned into active labor. The Doula came to the house to help everyone rest and get comfortable for the ride. In the middle of the night, we all snuck out to head to the hospital.

Apparently there were many other babies who decided to be born this same weekend and we were able to get the last Labor and Delivery room at Mama's work. Pressure waves were 5 min apart and Mama was dilated to 4 cm - things were looking like they were progressing pretty well with the exception that all the waves were concentrated in her back. Back labor is not for the faint of heart....

The pressure waves kept going steady and got progressively stronger, however Mama was not dilating as expected. She got tired. And hungry. And more tired. 18 hours in, she felt like she couldn't keep going. The doctors were talking about adding pitocin. Mama was really struggling with all the back labor. Thankfully, the Doula had an idea. We all suspected that Aravis was not in a great position (posterior or sunny side up) so we did a maneuver, which led to a very strong pressure wave, which immediately broke Mama's water (all over Daddy's pants and shoes), which led to Aravis crowning. Mama was quickly rushed over to the bed, holding Aravis' head, and got on all fours just in time for the charge nurse to rush in and catch her! What a dramatic ending to such build up! (Labor like her oldest brother and delivery like her younger brother!) She was healthy despite her cord being wrapped around the neck, but luckily her little arm and hand were in between to keep from choking her. Travis came on October 15th at 11:20 am.

Aravis' name comes from the heroine in the story of The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis as a part of the Chronicles of Narnia. Aravis flees an arranged marriage upon her talking Narnian horse Hwin and later becomes the Queen of Archenland. She is known as a skilled story teller and strong female character. Antoniette comes from the line of women in her family. Aravis' great tante was named Antonie. She was the younger sister of her great Oma who only lived into her 20s. Her Oma was supposed to have Antoniette as her middle name, however something was amiss in the paperwork when the birth was registered and Oma became Antoinette (like the french queen). When Mama was born, she took on the name of Antonie for the middle name. Now that Aravis is here, she will continue the namesake with Antoniette.

Not sure if Aravis' presentation into this world, including the supermoon and her namesake has indication as to her personality and future. We hope that she will be a strong, intelligent, and independent woman in a time when women can be valued as such. At a time when a woman might just be president of the United States. At a time when women's voices are now being respected and valued.

She's Here!

Our newest monkey made it into the Big Barrel this past weekend on October 15th. Aravis Antoniette Flora was born at 11:20 am after a long labor (story to come) and under a Super Moon. She weighed 8 pounds even and was 21 inches long! She was so much bigger than her brothers! Perhaps this has something to be said about her personality too (hence her namesake). We are all over the moon in love with her....
